Welcome to the 2024 Lent Challenge

Opening Up the ELCA Social Statement Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity and Culture and the ELCA Social Message on Human Rights

The Christ’s Kaleidoscope committee of the Northern Great Lakes Synod is once again offering a 40 Day Lenten Challenge. Christ’s Kaleidoscope is a group of NGLS people who are passionate about leading our Synod’s efforts to see others through the eyes of Jesus.

This year’s challenge will unpack and explore the ELCA social statement titled “Freed in Christ: Race, Ethnicity and Culture” along with the ELCA social message on Human Rights. In a world that often feels broken, we can be reminded of Christ’s love for humanity.

Who?

What?

Anyone and everyone interested in learning more about the workings of the Church through a Lutheran lens and seeking a way to learn, grow, and be changed for the sake of the gospel.

When?

Daily Schedule
  • 15-20 minutes (or more to go more in depth)
Sabbath Days/Catch Up Days
  • Typically Sunday and Monday (cohort meeting days)
  • These days are set aside to catch up on material if you were busy during the week.
  • Do what you can during the week and there is no pressure to have everything done by the cohort meeting.
Cohort Meetings
  • 1 hour each week
Participants of the 40 day challenge will receive a resource packet and schedule that includes recommended readings, videos, and reflection prompts that correspond with the 40 days of Lent. Cohorts will meet weekly to discuss and process the materials and learn how we can live out our Lutheran faith through a greater awareness and understanding of our world.

How?

  1. You will need a journal (electronic or hard copy).
  2. Access to the Schedule and the Website
  3. 15-20 minutes per day (or more if you like)
  4. An open mind and heart to allow the Holy Spirit to move in and through you.
  5. This is a place with resources provided to use as you are able.
Christ brings together the scattered children of God ( John 11:52). The Holy Spirit breathes the freedom of the gospel into the church, where every people under heaven is represented.
